Privacy Policy for Try It! Science

Try It! Science is an educational science experiment application designed for children and families. We take privacy seriously, especially when our users may include children. This Privacy Policy explains what information Try It! Science collects, how that information is used, when information may be shared with service providers, and the choices available to parents and users.
Try It! Science is referred to in this policy as “Try It! Science,” “we,” “us,” or “our.”
Information We Collect
You can use portions of Try It! Science without providing personal information. Certain optional features, including account-based features, subscription management, and cloud synchronization, may require information to be processed.
Account Information
If you choose to sign in using Google or another supported sign-in provider, we may receive basic account information from that provider. This may include your email address, display name, and a unique account identifier.
Try It! Science does not receive or store your Google password.
Account information is used to identify your Try It! Science account, restore eligible content, synchronize information between devices, and provide account-related features.
Science Activity and Journal Information
Try It! Science may store information about how the app is being used for educational purposes. This may include completed experiments, experiment progress, favorites, planned experiments, journal entries, observations, hypotheses, conclusions, profile information, and app settings.
For users who have access to cloud synchronization, eligible information may be stored using Google Firebase so that it can be restored or synchronized across devices.
Photos and drawings created or added to experiment journals are stored locally on the user’s device and are not uploaded to Try It! Science cloud storage as part of the standard cloud synchronization feature.
Try It! Science does not provide public profiles, public journals, public posting, chat rooms, or other features that allow children to make their information publicly available through the app.
Photos and Camera Access
Some Try It! Science activities may allow users to take or select photos for their science journal. Camera or photo access is used only when the user chooses to use a feature that requires it.
Journal photos are stored locally on the device. Try It! Science does not intentionally upload journal photos to our servers as part of cloud synchronization.
Removing the app or clearing its local data may permanently remove locally stored photos and drawings.
Voice Input
Try It! Science may provide optional voice-input features to make entering observations or other text easier. When voice input is used, speech recognition may be performed by the device’s operating system or its configured speech-recognition provider.
Try It! Science does not intentionally store recordings of a user’s voice on our servers. The privacy practices of the device’s speech-recognition provider may apply when that service is used.
The app’s read-aloud feature converts text to speech and does not require Try It! Science to record the user’s voice.
Subscription and Purchase Information
Try It! Science offers optional paid subscriptions. Purchases are processed through the applicable app marketplace, such as Google Play or the Apple App Store. Try It! Science does not receive or store complete credit card or other payment-card information.
We use RevenueCat to help manage subscriptions, determine subscription status, restore purchases, and provide premium features. RevenueCat may process information such as purchase history, subscription status, transaction or purchase identifiers, app user identifiers, device type, operating system, and timestamps associated with subscription activity.
Purchase information is used to provide and restore the features that the user has purchased.
Technical Information
Our service providers may automatically process limited technical information necessary to operate, secure, and maintain the app. Depending on the feature being used, this may include information such as IP address, device type, operating system, app version, authentication information, timestamps, and similar technical information.
For example, Firebase Authentication may process IP addresses and device or browser information as part of authentication and fraud-prevention processes.
We do not use this information to build advertising profiles of children.
Information We Do Not Use for Advertising
Try It! Science does not display third-party behavioral advertising.
We do not sell personal information.
We do not use children’s personal information for targeted or personalized advertising.
We do not use personal information to track children across unrelated apps or websites for advertising purposes.
Try It! Science does not request precise location information for its science experiment features. The app also does not require access to a user’s contact list or telephone number.
Notifications
If notifications are enabled, Try It! Science may send notifications related to the app, such as reminders to return to a multi-day experiment or notices that new experiments are available.
Notification permission is optional and can be changed through the device’s settings.
We do not use notifications to deliver third-party advertisements.
How We Use Information
Information processed through Try It! Science is used to operate the app, provide requested features, authenticate accounts, synchronize eligible information between devices, restore user activity, manage subscriptions, provide experiment reminders, troubleshoot problems, protect the security and reliability of the service, respond to support or privacy requests, and comply with applicable legal obligations.
We do not use information collected from children for unrelated marketing purposes.
Service Providers
Try It! Science relies on a limited number of service providers to operate certain features.
Google Firebase and Google Cloud services may be used for authentication, database storage, cloud synchronization, application hosting, notifications, and related infrastructure.
RevenueCat is used to manage subscription status and purchase entitlements.
Google Play and Apple, where applicable, process app downloads, subscriptions, purchases, and payments through their respective app stores.
These companies may process information necessary to provide their services. Their own privacy policies and contractual terms also govern their handling of information.
We limit the information provided to service providers to information reasonably necessary for them to perform services on our behalf.
Children’s Privacy
Try It! Science is designed for children and families and may be used by children under the age of 13.
We are committed to complying with applicable children’s privacy requirements, including the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, commonly known as COPPA.
Where parental consent is required by law before personal information can be collected from a child, Try It! Science will require appropriate parental or guardian authorization before enabling the applicable feature.
We do not require a child to disclose more personal information than is reasonably necessary to participate in an activity.
We do not knowingly sell children’s personal information, use children’s personal information for targeted advertising, or provide features that allow children to publicly disclose personal information through Try It! Science.
A parent or legal guardian may contact us to request information about personal information associated with their child, ask that information be corrected or deleted, or ask us to stop collecting or using that information.
Parents may refuse to allow further collection or use of their child’s personal information. Depending on the request, doing so may prevent certain account-based or cloud-based features from continuing to function, but it will not prevent access to portions of the app that do not require that information.
Data Storage and Retention
Cloud-synchronized account information is retained for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the user’s account and requested services or until deletion is requested, subject to legitimate security, legal, backup, and transaction-record requirements.
Some information associated with purchases may need to be retained by the applicable app store, RevenueCat, or other payment-related service providers for financial, fraud-prevention, or legal purposes.
Locally stored information, including locally stored photos and drawings, generally remains on the device until it is deleted within the app, the app’s data is cleared, or the app is removed.
Information stored by service providers may be processed in the United States or other locations in which those providers operate.
Data Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards intended to protect information handled through Try It! Science.
Cloud services used by the app provide security features such as encrypted network connections, authentication, access controls, and database security rules.
No online service or storage system can guarantee absolute security. We therefore continually evaluate the amount of information collected and seek to limit collection to information needed to provide the app’s features.
Data Deletion and Privacy Requests
Deleting cloud information does not necessarily delete locally stored information from a device. Local information can generally be removed by deleting the applicable content within the app, clearing the app’s local storage, or uninstalling the app.
Deleting Try It! Science account information also may not delete transaction records maintained independently by Google Play, Apple, RevenueCat, or another service where retention is required for purchase history, fraud prevention, accounting, or legal compliance.
No Sale of Personal Information
Try It! Science does not sell personal information, including the personal information of children.
We do not exchange personal information for money or provide it to advertising companies for behavioral or targeted advertising.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when Try It! Science changes, when our data practices change, or when legal or platform requirements change.
When the policy is updated, the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page will be changed. If a change materially affects how children’s personal information is collected, used, or disclosed, we will take any additional steps required by applicable law, which may include providing additional notice or obtaining new parental consent.
